Mr Michael says his favourite drink helped him detect a deadly disease before it was too late.

As a train driver, Michael, 58, regularly drank coffee to stay awake during his shifts. But in July 2021, he felt a sharp pain in his throat while drinking coffee.

When he went to the doctor, Mr. Michael was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. He began to feel tired just walking down the street. He had to undergo three months of intensive treatment.

According toThe Sun,The train driver underwent 35 rounds of radiotherapy and three rounds of chemotherapy, and was hospitalized twice before making a full recovery in February 2022. The patient, who lives in Leeds (UK), said he had a difficult time during treatment.

According to Cancer Research UK, around 12,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year. It is the eighth most common cancer in the country. Rates of this cancer have increased by 25% in the past 10 years.

After treatment, Mr. Michael began to regain his strength and was eager to resume work.

But in April 2022, he suffered a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that got stuck in an artery in his lungs. That day, Michael thought he would die, but doctors saved his life again. “I was extremely lucky,” the patient shared.

He is planning a 10-hour fundraising walk for Leeds Hospitals charity to thank the amazing people who helped him survive.

"Looking back, I feel so lucky to have survived all of this. I want to do whatever I can to help the hospital, to pay for the equipment they need. I don't have enough words to praise the medical staff," Michael confided.

According toMayoClinic, nasopharyngeal cancer refers to cancer that develops in the throat or larynx. Symptoms include neck swelling, neck lymph nodes, nasal congestion, nosebleeds, cough, voice changes (hoarseness, slurred speech), difficulty swallowing, earache, non-healing lumps or ulcers, sore throat, weight loss.

The exact cause of nasopharyngeal cancer is unknown. Some risk factors include pollution, eating salty foods, soy sauce, and moldy foods containing Nitrosamine, which is a carcinogen. Epstein Barr virus has also been detected in nasopharyngeal tumor cells. In addition, people with the same bloodline are likely to have the same disease./.
