(Baonghean.vn)- Syrian rebels have decided to participate in peace talks sponsored by Russia and Türkiye in the capital Astana (Kazakhastan) on January 23. This peace talks aim to thoroughly implement the ceasefire across Syria. This is considered a success in Russia's diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis that has entered its sixth year in this Middle Eastern country.

Russia, President Bashar al-Assad's most powerful ally, has turned its diplomatic efforts into action, especially after Syrian opposition forces suffered a strong counterattack last month that allowed the Syrian army to regain control of several districts in eastern Aleppo.

"A delegation of Syrian rebels will attend peace talks in Kazakhstan on January 23. The first issues to be discussed will be the implementation of the ceasefire and violations by the Damascus government, as well as humanitarian issues such as the delivery of aid and the release of prisoners," an official from the rebel group Free Syrian Army said.

Meanwhile, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) - representing the main opposition forces in Syria, expressed support for efforts towards the upcoming round of peace talks in Kazakhstan, and considered this negotiation a preliminary step towards resuming the next round of negotiations in Geneva (Switzerland).

Türkiye has long been a supporter of rebel groups in Syria fighting President Assad, but Ankara's current priority in Syria has shifted from overthrowing President Assad's government to fighting Kurdish forces and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) in northern Syria, bordering Turkey.
