Vietnamese women are becoming more beautiful and intelligent.

In terms of development indicators, Vietnamese women have more opportunities and are more comprehensively developed, but the numbers also show many unresolved issues.

Data from the United Nations shows that Vietnamese women are becoming more "beautiful", smarter, and more independent, but still face many unresolved problems over the past 20 years.

Healthier and more beautiful

BMI is an index used to measure the ratio of weight to height. Although there is much social controversy, BMI has long been considered one of the standards for assessing human balance.

In 1975, Vietnamese women were still at a low level of stunting with a BMI of 17.96, much lower than the WHO standard of 18.5.

In 2014, the index was 21.13. This figure is well within the WHO standard.

Vietnamese women live relatively healthy lives.

Worldwide, the growth of "lifestyle" diseases such as coronary artery disease, overweight, and diabetes is often associated with the use of stimulants and toxic substances.

Unhealthy lifestyle habits are clearly divided by gender. Globally, the rate of daily smoking among people over 15 years old: Men - 36%, Women - 8%; the rate of alcohol consumption: Men - 48%, Women - 29%.

In Vietnam, only about 1% of women smoke every day.

As a result, only about 10.2% of women over 20 years old were overweight (BMI>25), and only 1.2% were obese (BMI>30).

However, the world has recorded an increase in neurological diseases and memory loss. It is estimated that about 44 million people in the world are living with memory loss. Women also suffer greater consequences of this disease because of their longer life expectancy. They are also the gender primarily responsible for caring for relatives with dementia - as wives, daughters or daughters-in-law.

In Vietnam, these statistics are still lacking.

Education

Two centuries have seen a dramatic increase in the educational environment. The number of children, especially girls, attending primary school is increasing rapidly all over the world. In Vietnam, this figure has nearly doubled in just over 10 years. This figure is even greater when placed in the context of more than 58 million children worldwide, more than half of whom are girls, who do not attend school.

The proportion of girls attending secondary school and beyond is increasing rapidly, but is still falling compared to primary school. However, the gender gap continues to widen at higher levels of education. This will have a major impact on the role of women in many important occupations, especially those related to research, engineering and construction. In Vietnam, this trend is narrowing, but the proportion of women in technical occupations remains low.

Illiteracy rates among adult women in Vietnam are falling rapidly. Worldwide, the UN estimates that about 781 million people aged 15 and over are illiterate, of which nearly two-thirds are women, or about 520 million, a rate that has remained stagnant for nearly two decades.

But in Vietnam, illiteracy has almost disappeared.

Literacy is also more important for older women, as globally only about 70% of women and 81% of men are literate. In Vietnam, this figure is relatively close.

More independent

Over the past 20 years, women have become more independent. They are marrying later in life, in response to increased educational attainment, the emergence of gender organizations, and even their own awareness.

Child marriage is on the decline, with only 2.9% of children between the ages of 15 and 19 giving birth. Reducing early marriage means increasing educational opportunities for children, which in turn reduces domestic violence and social isolation.

In Vietnam, the average age of women giving birth is 27, and they only give birth to 1.8 children, much lower than the global figure of 2.5.

The bond between children and family is no longer as strong as before, more and more children are born before marriage. With this trend, along with the increasing divorce rate, single-parent families are increasing.

Sad numbers

Heterosexual violence remains the greatest risk women face. Around the world, women are victims of many types of violence: physical, sexual, psychological or economic, regardless of income, age or education.

Violence leads to physical, emotional and mental health problems. Nearly one-third of women worldwide have experienced violence. Shockingly, they are much more likely to be attacked by an intimate partner than by a stranger.

In Vietnam, the numbers show a similar trend.

Reducing violence has been identified by the United Nations as one of its top goals. To achieve this goal, women must first be aware of what violence is, before they can take action to fight it.

Statistics show that Vietnamese women are gradually recognizing acts of violence and respecting their own values more.

If in the past, women considered themselves "deserving of being beaten" if they made mistakes in family life, now that rate has decreased sharply.

Estimates of women’s life expectancy at birth have increased sharply, in 1990, women were expected to live about 70 years, by 2015, that number had increased to 80.4 years. Compared to men, Vietnamese women’s life expectancy is always predicted to be about 10 years higher.

This leads to some pretty sad numbers. Women are more likely than men to be lonely and live alone in old age, especially between the ages of 60 and 64.
