Supercapacitors provide greater energy and longer life than Li-ion batteries. |
Scientists at the University of Central Florida (USA) have applied nanotechnology to successfully develop supercapacitor batteries with energy many times higher than current battery technology. According to the description, this battery is made of flexible supercapacitors, including extremely small carbon nanotubes. Normally, carbon nanotubes are insulating materials, but they will become "supercapacitors" when covered with a layer of two-dimensional conductive material.
Yeonwoong 'Eric' Jung, a member of the research team, described that this material is different from the usual one because it can allow electrons to pass quickly from the core to the shell, thereby creating a huge source of energy. What's special is that this material can be created using "simple chemical synthesis methods".
According to scientists' calculations, the new battery has a life span 20 times longer than Li-ion batteries. "With supercapacitor batteries, just a few seconds of charging is enough to use for a whole week. Its lifespan is also very high, 30,000 charges and stable over time, unlike Li-ion batteries that usually lose energy after each charge," Mr. Jung emphasized.
In addition, with a large energy source but smaller structure than Li-ion batteries, supercapacitor batteries are expected to be present in ultra-thin smartphones, smart wearable devices, drones... in the future.
However, this new battery technology is still in the testing phase, and it is unclear when it will be commercialized.
