Putin calls Merkel on maintaining Iran nuclear deal
Russia and European powers are making efforts to continue implementing the Iran nuclear deal after the US withdrawal.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called German Chancellor todayAngela Merkel to discusson keeping the Iran nuclear deal intact despite the US decision to withdraw,AFPquoted a statement from the Kremlin.
"The importance of preserving the nuclear deal from the point of view of stabilizing the international and regional situation was highlighted," the Kremlin statement on the phone call between Putin and Merkel said.
Mrs Merkel said Germany and European partners would "do everything" to ensure Iran remained committed to the deal reached in 2015.The German Chancellor is scheduled to visit Russia next week.
US President Donald Trump announced on May 9 that he would withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions on Tehran.The nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers including the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China was signed in 2015 with the full name of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in which Iran agreed to significantly limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of Western sanctions.
The Russian president has previously expressed deep concern over the US president's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Russian officials have also said they will work with European partners to preserve the agreement.
The Russian President also spoke with his Turkish counterpart today.Recep Tayyip Erdogan, agreed that the US President "was wrong" to withdraw from the deal with Iran.Ankara has recently been working closely with Moscow and Tehran on the peace process in Syria.
Iranian Foreign MinisterMohammad Javad Zarif will visit Russia in the coming days, as part of a trip to Belgium and China.
