Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian leader had sent a message to Iran’s leadership. However, he said he “could not disclose any details” when asked whether the letter was related to oil production.
Earlier on the same day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said that the Iranian leadership had received a message from Mr. Putin. The letter was delivered by the Russian President's special envoy in charge of resolving the Syrian issue, Mr. Aleksandr Lavrentiev, during his visit to Tehran a few days ago and meeting with Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials also refused to disclose the content of the message.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman also noted the current intensity of consultations between Iran and Russia. Mr. Ghasemi said: “Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov is in Iran. He will meet with his Iranian counterpart (Hossein Jaber Ansari - Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs). Our contacts are expanding and tightening more than ever.”
