“We would do it again,” the official, who requested anonymity, said. “We sail in international waters at times and places of our choosing.”
Earlier that day, when testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter proposed more activities in the 12-nautical mile zone around the artificial islands built by China.
“We are operating on the basis that we will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows and whenever our operational needs require,” Mr. Carter said.
Washington has repeatedly stated that it does not recognize Beijing's sovereignty claims over the waters surrounding artificial islands in the East Sea./.
