Nghe An army and people contributed greatly to the Dien Bien Phu victory.
(Baonghean.vn)- During the resistance war against French colonialism and the Dien Bien Phu campaign, army and peopleNghe An has contributed a lot of human and material resources, achieved many outstanding feats, and contributed to the historic victory.
In December 1953, after the Party Central Committee decided to launch the Dien Bien Phu campaign, Nghe - Tinh was one of the important rear areas assigned the task of providing support. Nghe An province established the Front Supply Council to mobilize all resources to serve the campaign. With the slogan "All for Dien Bien Phu", Nghe An's army and people enthusiastically joined the army. The whole province had thousands of young people joining the army and tens of thousands of Youth Volunteers and frontline workers.

From the end of 1953, we opened the Central Laos front. Along with the large number of combat troops from Nghe An, the frontline labor force serving this battlefield was mainly farmers from the Lam River basin. By mid-December 1953, from here, there were 20,000 laborers on land, by river and nearly 1,500 bicycles going up to the neighboring land. They were mainly concentrated at Station Y20, on the Sebangphai River. There, the French army was attacked by surprise, panicked, fell into a passive position and then failed.
Next, after the Lunar New Year of Giap Ngo (1954), 30,000 porters on foot and 2,000 porters on bicycles from Nghe An went to serve the Dien Bien Phu battlefield. At that time, each bicycle usually carried from 100 to 130 kg of food, military equipment, and weapons. And when there was an urgent need from the front, porters could load their carts with one and a half to two times the amount of goods.

According to statistics from the Military Command and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of the province, in Nghe An, the number of young men joining the army as well as the number of soldiers who died in the Winter-Spring campaign (1953-1954) and in the Dien Bien Phu front accounted for the highest proportion compared to other provinces. In 1954 alone, Nghe An had 155,974 laborers serving the frontline. Of which, laborers serving in the Laos battlefield were nearly 24,400 people and 146,000 bicycle porters. And the number of laborers serving the Dien Bien Phu battlefield was over 30,000 people and 3,700 bicycle porters. |
One event that needs to be noted is that out of 20,000 105mm artillery shells that our troops fired at the Dien Bien Phu bases, 400 were taken by our soldiers and civilians from the French soldiers from the Xebangphai river basin in the Central Laos battlefield at that time and were also transported to the Northwest by Nghe An workers.
In addition, Nghe An mobilized 6,600 workers to rebuild and repair 320 km of roads (including 150 km of paved roads), build 3 large bridges, 32 small bridges, install 53 culverts, connecting the traffic arteries from Inter-zone 1 to Inter-zone 3, Inter-zone 5, and the Vietnam-Laos border to support the front line. The total effort expended was 1,574,152 working days.

In order for the soldiers at the front to not only have enough food and clothing but also feel secure in the rear so that they could defeat the enemy, from June 1953 to July 1954, Nghe An carried out 5 campaigns to reduce land rent and interest in 120 out of 155 communes in the plains and midlands. Many poor farming families had their debts erased, their fields and buffaloes divided. Their husbands and children at the front were therefore secure and eager to fight.
By February 1954, Nghe An had 1,496 tons of tax-paid rice dried, fanned, and stored in warehouses, equal to 80% of the total tax of the first crop that the Inter-Zone IV Administrative Committee allocated to the province.
To have that many products to serve the resistance at that time, it was a great effort of the people of Nghe An. Because in order to prevent the supply of supplies for the resistance from Thanh - Nghe - Tinh, the French army frantically bombed this rear area, collapsing dams and large and small agricultural and river systems, destroying many warehouses, wharves and killing countless innocent people. But the army and people of Nghe An were determined, because "All for the strategic attack of Winter - Spring 1953 - 1954", "All for Dien Bien Phu victory".
