Quynh Luu: Fishermen are forced to lower prices when selling seafood
(Baonghean.vn) - Although many authorities have warned that Nghe An's sea area is not affected by the mass fish deaths and offshore fishing products are safe, many fishermen in Quynh Long commune in particular and Quynh Luu commune in general are still forced to pay lower prices by purchasing agents when catching seafood.
With the number of boats reaching nearly 1,000, most of which are offshore fishing, the output of each trip is about 10 to 20 tons of fish/boat. Quynh Luu is currently the fleet with the largest monthly fishing output in Nghe An.
However, taking advantage of people's concerns about the fish deaths in the Central region and the uncertified and unproven origin of the fish, some purchasing agents have offered purchase prices 30-50% lower than last month's prices.

If last month the purchase price of hairtail fish for export at Lach Thoi wharf, Son Hai commune (Quynh Luu) was 100 thousand VND/kg, now it is only 80 thousand VND/kg. |

According to the owner of Loi Thao boat in Minh Thanh hamlet, Quynh Long commune, the price of buying spotted fish to make fish sauce at Lach Quen wharf used to be 15,000 VND/kg, now it has dropped to 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg. Revenue has decreased by nearly half, the boat's catch is just enough to cover expenses. |
Not only mackerel bought to process animal feed is being forced to lower its price, but seafood such as squid, spotted scad, mackerel... are also being forced to lower their price, causing many difficulties for fishermen.
Mr. Ngo Tri Dong - a ship owner in Dien Ngoc commune (Dien Chau) who imported fish at Lach Quen Port said: previously, his ship sold trash fish used to make animal feed for 6,500 VND/kg, but now it only sells for 4,500 VND/kg and it takes 2 days to buy, so the revenue from each trip has decreased from 100 million to 80 million VND/trip.
Ship owners hope that authorities will promptly inspect and provide support solutions to help people reduce difficulties and continue to go fishing.
