Green vegetables after Tet must be pulled out to feed pigs

After Tet, vegetable fields in the localities of Quynh Luu, Yen Thanh... fell into a state of silence, many vegetable fields were abandoned, overgrown with grass. Only a few people pulled cabbage to feed the pigs.

Looking at the 2 sao of cabbage growing well, Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh in Quynh Luong commune, Quynh Luu district is sad and not very interested in harvesting because the current purchase price is too low. So much effort and care costs but falling into a state of empty-handedness because the price of green vegetables has dropped miserably. Ms. Minh said that at this time, all types of vegetables are purchased at much lower prices than previous years; with 2 sao of cabbage ready to be harvested, if sold at 1,000 VND/kg, her family would lose tens of millions of VND.

This spring crop, Quynh Luong commune restructured 215 hectares of vegetables with main varieties such as kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, lettuce...

According to the locals, vegetable prices have dropped so much that people don't want to harvest because they don't make a profit. On average, people lose 1-2 million VND per 1 sao of vegetables.

“At the beginning of this year, vegetable prices were low, so no one was interested in harvesting. Many types of vegetables that were too old had to be uprooted to make way for a new crop. This vegetable crop, my family lost about 7 million VND with 4 sao of vegetables,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Quynh Luong commune.

According to research, currently, kohlrabi is 1,000 VND/kg, green onions are 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg, cabbage, various vegetables are 1,000 VND/kg... no one even buys them and they have to be pulled up and thrown ashore.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tue - Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee said that in the past 10 days, the local vegetable consumption market has decreased significantly compared to previous years, the reason is that due to favorable weather, other localities can grow vegetables, so the consumption in the market has decreased sharply. Normally, Quynh Luong commune people supply the market with 30 - 40 tons of vegetables per day, but in recent days it has only reached 10 - 15 tons.

Many small vegetable fields in Yen Thanh district are also in a state of stagnation, people have abandoned their vegetable fields, not wanting to harvest, many cabbage patches have burst open in the fields.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, Phan Dang Luu hamlet, Nam Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) has a 300 m2 cabbage field.², should have been harvested 15 days ago, but because the selling price was too cheap, so left it, hoping the selling price would increase. Unexpectedly, the price of vegetables dropped even more, even to the point of not being able to sell.

Green vegetables are so cheap that many farmers buy cabbage to cut for pigs, chickens, geese... to eat. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Loc Thanh hamlet, Nam Thanh commune, currently raises 2 sows and hundreds of chickens and geese. She said: Cabbage is cheap so she buys it to cut for pigs and chickens to eat, which saves a lot of money compared to buying sweet potato vegetables.
