'Fire Dragon' S-300 protects Vietnam's airspace

According to the Ministry of National Defense's electronic information portal, the S-300 air defense system is one of the most advanced weapons in the Vietnam People's Army's arsenal, playing an important role in protecting the country's airspace.

On the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2016), Tien Phong newspaper reporters introduced the exercise of deploying the S-300 air defense system by a unit of the Vietnam Air Defense - Air Force.

The S-300PMU1 (NATO designation SA-20 Gargoyle) was designed and developed by Russia from the S-300P generation for export purposes, first introduced in 1999.

The S-300PMU1 missile system is a new generation of modern weapons in the world, meeting the requirements of high-tech warfare and strong electronic warfare. With advanced technology, the S-300PMU1 can resist all types of enemy interference.

The S-300PMU1 is designed to counter mass air attacks at all altitudes and speeds, as well as powerful electronic suppression of current and new-generation enemy air combat vehicles.

The S-300PMU-1 for export can be equipped with up to 3 types of ammunition: 5V55R, 48N6E and 48N6E2. The 5V55R air defense missile was launched in 1978, 7m long, 450m in diameter, maximum weight 1.45 tons, equipped with a 133kg warhead, 90km range, cruising speed 1,700m/s. The missile is equipped with a semi-active radar homing head.

Compared with the US Patriot missile, the S-300PMU1 is superior in 3 important points: Shorter combat deployment time (5 minutes compared to 15 minutes), launch method (vertical compared to inclined launch; can control 2 missiles at the same time to a target (Patriot can only control 1). In particular, the target shooting rate of the S-300PMU1 is always highly appreciated.

The S-300PMU1 can destroy flying targets such as all types of fighter aircraft, low-altitude attack weapons, strategic cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, tactical-operational ballistic missiles or ballistic missiles operating in the atmosphere.
