Rooney signs for Everton

Everton released a statement today, July 9, confirming that they have completed the signing of Wayne Rooney.

After signing the contract, Everton posted a video on Twitter. In it, Rooney said: "Hello everyone. It's great to be back at Everton. I'm really excited to be back in the blue shirt and playing at Goodison. See you soon."

Rooney insists he is not just returning to his boyhood club for sentimental reasons, but is aiming to win trophies. "Winning something with Everton would be the pinnacle of my career," he said.

Rooney started his career in Everton's youth team, impressed when he broke into the first team and forced Man Utd to spend up to 40 million dollars in 2004 for an 18-year-old player.

In the Man Utd shirt, Rooney became a legend after 13 seasons as the club's all-time leading scorer with 253 goals. However, the 31-year-old striker is no longer in coach Jose Mourinho's plans. Last season, Rooney only played 15 matches in the Premier League.

Despite attractive offers from China and the US, Rooney decided to return to Everton. Man Utd also created maximum conditions for the English striker to fulfill his wish, when allowing him to leave for free even though he had one year left on his contract. The Old Trafford team even supported Everton with a part of Rooney's salary.
