Is excessive hair loss a sign of cancer?

Thanh Tam April 4, 2025 08:56

Hair loss is not a symptom of cancer; cancer patients may experience hair loss after undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Dr. Pham Dang Bang, a dermatologist at TTClinic Dermatology Clinic, affirms that excessive hair loss is not a sign of cancer.

On average, each person loses about 100 strands of hair per day, and new hair grows to replace them. Therefore, this is not a cause for excessive worry. However, excessive hair loss can be due to several reasons, such as hormonal deficiencies or imbalances, commonly seen in women after childbirth, during menstruation, perimenopause, or menopause.

In addition, other factors such as lack of sleep, genetics, nutritional deficiencies, overuse of hair chemicals, or medication use can also cause hair loss.

Excessive hair loss can be a potential sign of several other medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, lupus, polycystic ovary syndrome, scalp infections, or as a side effect of chemotherapy in cancer treatment.

The doctor suggested several remedies for hair loss:

A balanced diet

A nutritious diet is crucial for maintaining healthy hair. Ensuring you get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals is essential for nourishing your hair from within.

Reduce stress and tension.

Avoid anxiety and stress, which can cause hair loss. Maintaining a calm and relaxed state of mind will help improve hair loss.

Washing your hair correctly

You should wash your hair with a shampoo suitable for your hair type to help reduce oil production on the scalp and minimize hair breakage and loss.

Limit smoking and drinking alcohol.

Tobacco and alcohol can negatively impact hair health. Limiting or stopping the use of these products will help improve hair health.

Avoid staying up late.

Sleep is crucial for the body's recovery and hair growth, helping to reduce hair loss.

If the above measures do not improve your hair loss, you should consult a dermatologist. Experts will help determine the cause and provide appropriate treatment.
