Ky Son ginger products are granted geographical indications.
(Baonghean.vn) - Ginger is a typical product of the border district of Ky Son, widely consumed domestically and exported.
The National Office of Intellectual Property has just issued Decision No. 5587/QD-SHTT on granting a Certificate of Geographical Indication registration for ginger products of Ky Son mountainous district.
In Ky Son, people mainly produce two types of ginger: ginger and buffalo horn ginger. Ginger is consumed domestically, mainly in Ho Chi Minh City, while buffalo horn ginger is exported to countries in the region. Ky Son ginger products are used to make essential oils, spices, flavorings, medicines, foods, etc.
Ky Son ginger has small tubers, round body, many branches, ivory white skin and flesh, light yellow core, lots of fiber. Characteristic aroma, strong spicy taste. Water content from 91.09% to 92.61%, essential oil content calculated on dry matter from 3.52% to 8.31%.

Ky Son buffalo horn ginger has large tubers, round stems, few branches. The skin and flesh are white, the core is light yellow, and has little fiber. Characteristic aroma, spicy and strong taste. Water content ranges from 91.06% to 93.66%, sugar content ranges from 1.13% to 1.25%, essential oil content calculated on dry matter ranges from 3.16% to 4.12%. Research results show that spiciness and essential oil content are characteristic factors of Ky Son ginger.
Ky Son ginger is grown in many communes such as: Na Ngoi, Bao Thang, Dooc May, Muong Long, Huoi Tu, Tay Son, Nam Can, Nam Can, Muong Ai, Muong Tip, Keng Du, Na Loi, Bac Ly, My Ly and Bao Nam. Of which, the most grown is in Na Ngoi commune with over 150 hectares.

On November 27, the mountainous district of Ky Son organized a workshop to evaluate the model of growing yellow buffalo horn ginger, which was tested in the border commune of Na Ngoi, Ky Son, deployed by the Ky Son District Agricultural Extension Station in February 2019 on an area of 1 hectare, with 10 households in Ka Noi village, Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son participating. Participating in the model, households were provided with over 1.3 tons of ginger seeds, 520 kg of NPK fertilizer, and trained in proper ginger planting and care techniques. According to the assessment, the ginger yield reached over 50 tons/ha, 10 to 15 tons/ha higher than the native ginger grown by the Mong people for generations.
