Ky Son ginger products have been granted geographical indication.
(Baonghean.vn) - Ginger is a signature product of Ky Son border district, widely consumed domestically and exported.
The Intellectual Property Office has just issued Decision No. 5587/QD-SHTT granting a Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration for ginger products from Ky Son mountainous district.
In Ky Son, the locals mainly produce two types of ginger: small ginger and buffalo horn ginger. Small ginger is consumed domestically, primarily in Ho Chi Minh City, while buffalo horn ginger is exported to countries in the region. Ky Son ginger is used to produce essential oils, spices, flavorings, medicinal herbs, and food products.
Kỳ Sơn ginger has small, round tubers with many branches. The skin and flesh are ivory white, the core is light yellow, and it is fibrous. It has a distinctive aroma and a strong, pungent taste. The water content ranges from 91.09% to 92.61%, and the essential oil content (calculated on a dry matter basis) ranges from 3.52% to 8.31%.

Ky Son buffalo horn ginger has large, round tubers with few branches. The peel and flesh are white, the core is light yellow, and it has little fiber. It has a distinctive aroma and a pungent, intense spiciness. The water content ranges from 91.06% to 93.66%, the sugar content from 1.13% to 1.25%, and the essential oil content (calculated on a dry matter basis) from 3.16% to 4.12%. Research results show that spiciness and essential oil content are characteristic features of Ky Son ginger.
Ky Son ginger is widely grown by local people in communes such as Na Ngoi, Bao Thang, Dooc May, Muong Long, Huoi Tu, Tay Son, Nam Can, Nam Can, Muong Ai, Muong Tip, Keng Du, Na Loi, Bac Ly, My Ly, and Bao Nam. The largest area of ginger cultivation is in Na Ngoi commune, with over 150 hectares.

On November 27th, Ky Son district, a mountainous area, held a workshop to evaluate a pilot project on cultivating yellow-fleshed buffalo horn ginger. This project, implemented by the Ky Son District Agricultural Extension Station in February 2019, covered an area of 1 hectare with 10 households in Ka Noi village, Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district. Participating households received over 1.3 tons of ginger seeds, 520 kg of NPK fertilizer, and training on proper ginger cultivation and care techniques. According to the assessment, ginger yield reached over 50 tons/ha, 10 to 15 tons/ha higher than the local ginger traditionally grown by the Mong ethnic group.
