During the trial, the wife and children of the victim Lo Minh Huong were present early and remained calm throughout the trial. Although their pain had not yet subsided, they did not speak harshly or show any resentment towards Thai.
Thai and his first wife had a child born in 2004 and she is currently working abroad in Malaysia. Thai lives with Ms. H. and has 4 children with her, the first child was born 1 year before his official wife's child. Before living with this common-law wife, Nguyen Van Thai was sentenced to 3 months in prison by the People's Court of Vinh City for "Gambling" in 2007. In 2009, Thai was sentenced to 25 months in prison by the People's Court of Vinh City for "Illegal drug trafficking".

In 2016, Ms. H. gave birth to Thai's fourth child, but unfortunately the baby suffered from hydrocephalus - an incurable disease. Since the child was born, Thai and his wife had to regularly take him to the hospital, which was very expensive while Thai did not have a stable job and was addicted to drugs.
In mid-May 2017, Thai’s son continued to be admitted to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for treatment. The treatment lasted nearly 2 months, making Thai and his wife exhausted. During this time, Thai continued to secretly use drugs and was caught by security guard Lo Minh Huong.
When the department head where Thai’s son was being treated received a report that someone was using drugs and throwing needles in the bathroom, Nguyen Van Thai was put in the “crosshairs”. Conflicts began to arise between Thai and security guard Huong, especially when this guard asked Thai to comply with regulations to ensure security, order, and general hygiene in the treatment area.
“The head doctor called the defendant in and told him to transfer his child to a higher level for treatment or take him home. If he wanted to stay here for treatment, he had to follow the hospital's regulations. If Mr. Huong did not tell the department, why would the head of the department tell the defendant like that? According to the regulations, each patient has one person in the room to take care of him. That day, the defendant was the only one looking after the child. His wife went out, but Mr. Huong still chased the defendant out and did not let him stay in the treatment room to take care of the child, while the other patients' relatives were not chased out,” defendant Nguyen Van Thai said.
On the morning of June 30, 2017, Thai was at the grocery store in front of the hospital when he received a phone call from his wife, asking her to meet the head of the department. Believing that security guard Huong had badmouthed him to the department head, causing the doctor to not let Thai's son continue to stay for treatment, Thai took a knife and went to find Mr. Huong to take revenge.
Meeting Mr. Huong in the hospital, Thai and the security guard had an argument. Thai stabbed the guard four times and then ran away, but was subdued by the security force and the people, arrested and handed over to the police. Mr. Huong was given emergency care but died the next day due to a severed artery, punctured heart and both lungs.
Nguyen Van Thai admitted all his crimes and admitted that he was a drug addict, but the drug Thai used was crystal meth, so Mr. Huong's "telling" to the department leader that Thai threw the needle in the toilet was incorrect.
“Do you know what it means to be high on drugs?” the judge asked. “I have heard of it, but I used it secretly and did not have much to use, so I was not high,” Thai replied, adding that at the time of the incident, he was completely sober and not under the influence of drugs.
Nguyen Van Thai said that for many years, the defendant has not returned to his parents' home. Therefore, although he knows that his parents have achievements in the revolution and have been awarded medals, he does not know the specifics to present to the panel of judges to consider and reduce the sentence according to the law.
Thai expressed remorse, apologized to the victim, and asked the jury to consider reducing his sentence so that he could return home to raise his children with his wife. The defendant also agreed to pay compensation as requested by the victim. While waiting for the jury to deliberate, Nguyen Van Thai appeared quite comfortable talking to reporters. When asked about his wife, Thai shook his head and said no one had come today. When asked about his sick child, Thai's eyes fell, "He passed away. About 10 days after I was arrested, he passed away..." |
Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Nguyen Van Thai to life in prison for “Murder”, forcing the defendant to compensate the victim more than 180 million VND including funeral expenses and mental damage…
