Giant jellyfish on British coast
A diver had the chance to encounter a giant jellyfish with a two-metre long body and 20 tentacles on the west coast of Wales.
With more than 20 tentacles, the compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella) is a large, brown-orange jellyfish. It has four tubes, called mouth arms, that are longer than the tentacles. The tentacles are filled with venom cells that capture prey and can deliver extremely painful stings to humans.
The strange jellyfish was discovered by Lloyd Jones, a diving instructor on the coast of St Brides Haven, Wales, last week. "Compass jellyfish are usually around two metres long. The girl diving with Angharad Rees pointed it out as it swam over our heads. We have seen a lot of them in the past two weeks. The rising sea temperatures are affecting their numbers and migration patterns," Wales Online quoted Jones as saying.
