Syrian air defenses have been activated in response to an apparent missile attack on the Shayrat airbase in Homs province.

Up to 10 missiles were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces, a military source told Russia's Sputnik news agency. According to Syria's SANA news agency, the country's air defenses intercepted some of the missiles. Al Mayadeen news agency said all the missiles were intercepted and there were no casualties or material damage at the targeted base.

The Pentagon denied initiating the attacks or conducting any military operations in Homs province. "There are no US military operations in that area at this time," a Pentagon spokesman told Reuters. The information was also shared by Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon with the TASS news agency.

The airstrike in Homs reportedly occurred simultaneously with another missile attack on an air base near Damascus. According to various Arab media outlets, three missiles were aimed at Al Dumayr airport, but all were shot down by Syrian air defenses.

According to some unconfirmed reports, the missiles came from Lebanon into Syrian airspace, suggesting that the Israeli Air Force may have been involved, Al-Masdar News quoted a military source as saying. The newspaper's reporter also posted several videos showing the interceptor missiles being launched.

However, Israel has not commented on the related allegations. "We do not comment on such reports," an Israeli military spokesman told Reuters.

Meanwhile, a US Defense Department spokesman told Sky News Arabic that "there are multiple players" in the region who could carry out an attack on the morning of April 17 in Syria.

The airstrike came just days after the US, along with Britain and France, launched 105 missiles at three sites that the Pentagon said were chemical weapons facilities in Syria.Syriain response to a suspected chemical attack in Douma. The West blamed the government of Syrian President Assad, but Damascus and Moscow insisted they were not involved.
