On December 15, a mining accident occurred in Chongqing city, Sichuan province, killing at least 7 people and injuring 3 others.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred on the afternoon of December 15 (local time) after the ladder carrying miners broke, causing the part to fall into the mine.

Three injured people were taken to hospital, one of whom is in critical condition. The incident is currently under investigation.

Deadly mining accidents are common in China despite efforts by Chinese authorities to improve working conditions and crack down on illegal mining.

Last October, 21 people died in a mine collapse in Shandong province after high pressure inside the shaft caused an explosion, blocking the tunnel and trapping many miners. Only nine miners were rescued.

In December 2016, explosions occurred at two different mines in Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang province, killing at least 59 people.

China's National Mining Safety Administration said 375 people died in mining accidents in 2017, down nearly 29 percent from the previous year./.
