Three buses were attacked as they approached Wardak province, police said. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two suicide bombers were involved and that there could be more casualties. An Interior Ministry official said 27 people had been killed and 40 wounded. The Taliban claimed responsibility.
The first attack targeted a bus carrying police students and instructors. Then, as rescuers arrived, a second attacker drove a car bomb into the bus, killing dozens more.
Today’s attacks add to the deadly security threat in Afghanistan. They come just a week before a NATO summit in Warsaw, where leaders will discuss maintaining support for the Kabul government.
The new Taliban leader, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, who replaced his predecessor Mullah Akhtar Mansour who was killed by the US last month, is constantly organizing attacks to show his intention to oppose support from Western countries.
The most recent attack took place just 10 days ago. A suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus carrying Nepalese security guards working for the Canadian embassy in Kabul, killing 14 people. Earlier in April, at least 64 people were killed in a deadly Taliban bombing of a security services facility in Kabul.
Last week, senior United Nations officials in Afghanistan warned of the dangers of a new spiral of violence following recent suicide bombings and a series of kidnappings by Taliban terrorists.
