Temporarily suspending circulation of 3 batches of soft drinks with high lead content

On May 20, the Ministry of Health Inspectorate had a meeting with URC Hanoi Limited Liability Company regarding issues related to the "suspicion" that two types of products, C2 lemon-flavored green tea and Red Dragon strawberry-flavored energy drink, contained lead levels exceeding the permissible threshold.

After the meeting, the Ministry of Health Inspectorate immediately issued document No. 81 announcing the temporary suspension of circulation of goods for 3 batches of products of URC Hanoi Limited Company because the lead content was higher than the announced standard from 0.003 to 0.035 mg/L.

Based on current legal regulations and the latest test results conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition, the Ministry of Health Inspectorate decided to temporarily suspend the circulation from May 20, 2016 for 3 batches of food products of URC Hanoi Company in Lot CN 2.2, Thach That - Quoc Oai Industrial Park, Thach That District, Hanoi because the lead content did not meet the applicable announced standards.

The first batch of product is C2 lemon-flavored green tea, manufactured on February 4, 2016; expiry date on February 4, 2017, with a lead content test result of 0.085 mg/L, while the declared level is less than or equal to 0.05 mg/L. The second batch of product is Red Dragon strawberry-flavored energy drink, manufactured on February 19, 2016; expiry date on November 19, 2016, with a lead content test result of 0.053 mg/L, while the declared level is less than or equal to 0.05 mg/L.

The third batch of product is Red Dragon strawberry-flavored energy drink, manufactured on November 10, 2015; expiry date on August 10, 2016, with a test result of 0.068 mg/L of lead, while the declared level is less than or equal to 0.05 mg/L.

Accordingly, URC Hanoi Company is responsible for temporarily suspending the circulation of goods that do not meet the above-mentioned announced standards, and for recalling and preserving goods that do not meet the announced standards pending further handling, in accordance with the provisions of law.

The Company is responsible for reporting specifically the quantity of products manufactured, sold, sales locations and remaining inventory of each batch of goods with unsatisfactory test results; the specific quantity of each batch of raw materials used to produce batches of products with unsatisfactory test results as notified, and sending them to the Ministry of Health Inspectorate on May 23, 2016.

The above goods are only allowed to continue circulating when the remediation has been carried out to meet product quality requirements, in accordance with the applicable announced standards, reported to the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Health with evidence of remediation and the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Health issues a notice that the goods are allowed to continue circulating on the market./.

Before the Ministry of Health Inspectorate and the police got involved, information appeared on the online community that the raw material samples sent by URC Vietnam Company for testing had high lead content, and that the samples of C2 green tea lemon-flavored soft drink produced on February 4 and the Red Dragon energy drink produced on February 19 contained lead content 1.5 times higher than the permitted level. However, later, another test result dated April 21 showed that the lead content in the C2 and Red Dragon soft drink samples was within the permitted limit.

At the same time, there was information that URC Vietnam Company bribed 1 billion VND to 2 officials of the National Institute for Food Safety Control to change the test results. The case is being investigated and clarified by the authorities.
