The vote took place at the 87th session of the Interpol General Assembly in Dubai.
In addition to Kim Jong Yang, the candidate for this position is Russian Interior Ministry Major General Alexander Prokopchuk, who is currently Interpol Vice President for Europe.
The election for a new head of Interpol was announced after the former president of Interpol, Chinese national Meng Hongwei, resigned in October. He went missing in late September and was later found to be in custody in China, where he was convicted of corruption.
After Mr. Meng Hongwei left Interpol, according to the organization's regulations, Mr. Kim Jong Yang, who previously held the position of Senior Vice President of Interpol, became acting President of Interpol.
