Train derails in India, 10 people killed

An express train derailed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, killing 10 people and injuring 150.

Several train carriages derailed and went off the tracks near the city of Muzaffarnagar, north of the capital New Delhi, India, on August 19. At least 10 people were killed and 150 injured in the accident, Reuters reported.

At the scene, the train carriages were lying on top of each other, some of them were seriously damaged. The casualties were confirmed by Utkal Express, the train operator.

"An inquiry will be conducted to find out the cause of the accident. Any lapse will be dealt with strictly," Indian Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu said. Several ambulances have been rushed to the scene and authorities are taking all measures to save the lives of the injured, Prabhu said.
