Lisbon tourist tragedy: Funicular derails, at least 15 tourists killed
Lisbon plunged into mourning after a century-old funicular train derailed horribly. At least 15 people were killed, many victims were trapped in the rubble.
A serious accident that occurred late Wednesday afternoon turned a famous tourist spot in the Portuguese capital Lisbon into a tragic scene. The Glória Funicular mountain train suddenly derailed, went off the tracks and flipped on its side, claiming the lives of at least 15 people and injuring many more.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene to rescue the victims still trapped inside. The scene was extremely chaotic with smoke and dust and desperate cries for help.
Videos posted on social media captured the horrific moments immediately after the incident. The train car was overturned and deformed while passengers tried to escape by climbing out of the windows. Firefighters, police and medical staff quickly sealed off the area and carried out rescue work through the night.
“Today is a tragic day for our city. All the authorities are at the scene to support the victims,” Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas said with emotion.

The Glória funicular is not only a means of transportation but has become a tourist icon of Lisbon. With more than 130 years of age (in operation since 1885), each train can carry a maximum of 42 passengers, mainly international tourists coming to explore the city. The incident that happened to such a long-standing and safe icon has shocked many people.
The exact cause of the derailment is still unclear. The Carris Transport Authority said it has activated all response measures and the top priority is rescue and monitoring the situation. The Criminal Investigation Police force has been involved to find clues.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent their condolences to the victims' families.
