According to Sputnik, the Russian nuclear submarine Project-949 Krasnoyarsk caught fire yesterday while it was parked at a ship scrapping plant in Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka, Russia's Far East.

Images of billowing smoke from the area were circulated on social media and local media. The images showed the bow of the ship engulfed in smoke.

The fire broke out while the hull was being dismantled, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a press release. "Before being sent to the dismantling plant, all weapons systems and nuclear components were removed. There is no threat to the ecosystem," the ministry said.

The fire at the plant has been extinguished and there is "no technological or ecological threat," the plant representative said.

The Krasnoyarsk submarine was built in 1983 and decommissioned in 1998.
