The Thai Department of Fisheries said on May 7 that its patrol force had just arrested five fishing boats and 30 Vietnamese crew members for illegal fishing in the Ko Nu waters of Songkhla province, southern Thailand.
The Thai Department of Fisheries conducted the above-mentioned arrest after receiving information from the Navy Region 2 Command about the discovery of foreign fishing vessels illegally fishing in Thai waters.
The crew members are currently being detained in Songkhla province for questioning, and will then be transferred to the local police station to await trial on charges of illegal fishing in Thai waters and violating the Act Regulating Fishing Rights in Thai Waters, BE 2482 and the Fisheries Act, BE 2558.
Previously, on May 3, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chatchai Sarikulya visited Prachuap Khiri Khan province and announced a plan to improve the capacity and efficiency of fishing patrol forces across the country.
He also encouraged fishermen to strictly comply with legal regulations and affirmed that the Thai Government will not be lenient with illegal fishing activities./.
