At around 1am on July 17, storm No. 2 made landfall in Nghe An. Storm No. 2's circulation caused strong winds of level 7 and 8; on Hon Ngu island, there were gusts of level 12, and on the coastal mainland, there were gusts of level 9 and 10, causing heavy rain in the province. The total rainfall from July 14 to 4am on July 17 provided by the North Central Hydrometeorological Station was generally from 100 to over 240mm.

On July 16, a 40CV motorboat carrying 7 technical staff of the North Central Hydrometeorological Station went to Hon Ngu Island to fix a problem at the Hon Ngu Hydrometeorological Station. On the way to shore, the engine broke down. The Provincial Border Guard Command sent a rescue boat to tow and bring the 7 staff safely to shore.
According to a quick report from the Provincial Border Guard Command, the VTP 26 ship with 13 crew members, a tonnage of more than 5,000 tons and 4,700 tons of coal running on the route Hai Phong - Cua Lo capsized, the stern of the ship floated 800m north of Ngu Island. Currently, the Nghe An Border Guard Command has established a command post in front of Cua Lo port and coordinated with relevant agencies and fishermen to search and rescue the 13 crew members.

Reporting at the meeting, comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control said: Currently, members of the Provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control are directly going to the locality to participate in directing the work of coping with and overcoming storms; calculating the damage and immediately implementing the work of overcoming the consequences caused by the storm, handling environmental sanitation after the storm; at the same time focusing on handling traffic congestion caused by landslides caused by rain, guiding traffic, ensuring safety for people in flooded areas, overflowing streams, and ferry piers.

Irrigation companies and localities operate pumping stations, drainage sluices and drainage canal systems to drain water and protect rice and crops.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung emphasized: Storm No. 2 is not big but it is developing quickly. Although localities and forces have focused on directing, there are still human losses. Due to the impact of the tropical depression, flash floods and landslides continue to threaten people's lives, so on the one hand, we have to overcome the consequences after the storm, on the other hand, we have to focus on searching for the sunken ship VTP 26, and mobilize border guards, navy, etc. to search for missing people.

The Provincial People's Committee visited and provided timely support to people affected by the storm, especially families with deceased victims; assisted people in repairing their houses to stabilize their lives.
The Deputy Prime Minister also requested that because this is the first storm of the year, with unpredictable developments, the National Committee for Search and Rescue should draw lessons to organize and direct timely responses to all developments, especially strong storms.
According to preliminary reports, by 4:00 a.m. on July 17, the storm had killed 1 person (Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, born in 1969, in Block 8, Quynh Thien Ward, Hoang Mai Town, the cause was due to a collapsed corrugated iron roof beam crushing her); 2,872 houses and shops had their roofs blown off (including 1 commune People's Committee headquarters, 1 medical station, 2 schools and 2 apartment buildings). 152 electric poles were broken; 350 hectares of acacia were knocked down, 100,000 trees were knocked down; 2,000 hectares of sesame were knocked down; 250 hectares of corn, 370 hectares of watermelon, 350 hectares of various vegetables, 4,550 hectares of summer-autumn rice were flooded. Regarding infrastructure works such as landslides, damaged roads and other infrastructure, localities are monitoring the situation. |
