With an elo rating of 2351, Thao Nguyen is the player with the lowest elo rating among the last 16 remaining players in the tournament. Meanwhile, Muzychuk Anna is the second seed with an elo rating of 2558. In 2016, the Ukrainian player played very well with the individual gold medal in the first board of the 2016 Olympiad for the Ukrainian women's team, as well as the women's rapid and blitz chess events of the world.
So, even though she was given the white pieces (to go first), Thao Nguyen only played well in the first 30 moves. After that, the number 1 Vietnamese player continuously made mistakes under great pressure from Muzychuk Anna. As a result, Thao Nguyen had to accept defeat in the 51st move.
Thao Nguyen will meet Muzychuk Anna again in the return match on February 18. However, the possibility of Thao Nguyen turning the tables against strong opponent Muzychuk Anna is very difficult, especially when she has to hold the black pieces (go queen).
