10-year-old chess grandmaster from Nghe An wins 5 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal at Southeast Asian Youth Chess Championship

On the morning of July 13, Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh (10 years old) returned home with pride after days of intense competition at the Southeast Asian Youth Chess Championship, held in Penang, Malaysia. She won a total of 6 medals.

According to information from the local authorities of Lam Thanh commune, Nghe An province, on the morning of July 13, chess grandmaster Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh and her family have just returned home after a series of days of competition at the Southeast Asian World Youth Chess Championship.

Phuong Anh is currently a 4th grade student at Hoa Binh Primary School, Lam Thanh Commune. At this tournament, she brought home 5 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal in the chess competitions.

Phuong Anh's outstanding achievements have contributed to creating a "golden rain" for the Vietnamese team at this year's regional tournament.

The Southeast Asian World Youth Chess Championship will be held in Penang, Malaysia from July 1 to 11, 2025, bringing together 300 players from 18 countries and territories, including: Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taipei, the United States and Vietnam.

Among them, the Vietnamese delegation had the strongest force with 143 players participating. The tournament gathered many international-class players with 57 players who had achieved major titles, including 2 Grandmasters (GM) and 9 International Masters (IM).

In the standard, rapid and blitz chess categories, the Vietnamese Youth Chess Team won first place overall, leading the medal tally.
