1. President Trump becomes the most followed leader on Twitter

US President Donald Trump has surpassed Pope Francis to become the most followed world leader on Twitter, Fox News reported on October 5.

Mr Trump currently has around 40 million Twitter users around the world, while the Pope has slightly fewer followers.

The US leader uses English to write on Twitter, while the Pope uses two main accounts in English and Spanish and has other accounts in Italian, Arabic, Polish, French, German, Portuguese and Latin.

2. President Trump's ex-wife refuses to be Czech Ambassador

Ivana Trump, ex-wife of US President Donald Trump, revealed on October 5 that she was invited to be ambassador to the Czech Republic, but declined because she had a "perfect life".

In an interview with CBS, Ivana said that President Trump offered her the opportunity to be the US ambassador to her home country, but she refused.

“I like my freedom. I like to do what I want, go where I want, with who I want. And I can afford to live my life. Why don't I have to go and say goodbye to Miami in the winter, goodbye to Saint-Tropez in the summer, and goodbye to New York in the spring and fall? I have a perfect life.”

3. US House Committee approves $10 billion budget package to build border wall

The US House Homeland Security Committee on October 5 passed a border security bill that would spend $10 billion to build a border wall, Epoch Times reported.

In addition to building the border wall, the bill would add 5,000 Border Patrol agents and 5,000 Customs and Border Protection agents.

The bill, called the “Border Security for America Act,” also includes $5 billion to help combat drug smuggling at major ports of entry. (See details)

4. America prepares to deal with new storm

Hurricane Nate is expected to hit the US coast this weekend after it passed through Central America, killing at least 22 people, Fox News reported.

The US National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Nate is currently moving with winds of 64km/h and is expected to pass east of Honduras on the evening of October 6.

Previously, the storm killed 15 people in Nicaragua and seven others in Costa Rica.

5. France discovers homemade explosive devices in Paris

On October 5, French security agencies said they had discovered six bottles of gasoline connected to “rudimentary ignition devices” under trucks from a cement factory in the 19th district of Paris.

Workers at the factory discovered the petrol bottles while working in the morning and reported it to the authorities. Bomb disposal units were immediately dispatched to the factory and a security perimeter was set up.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has announced the opening of an investigation into “intentional sabotage” against the French-Swiss cement joint venture Lafarge. Lafarge has been investigated for “indirectly financing armed groups,” including the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization. The company is also suspected of being a “terrorist sponsor.”

6. Tens of thousands of people visit the King of Thailand

Tens of thousands of people dressed in black lined up under the scorching sun on October 5 to pay their last respects to King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Sanam Luang, Bangkok.

Reuters described lines of people stretching for kilometers on the streets near the Chao Phraya River towards the Grand Palace, many people had to wait more than 12 hours to pay their respects.

October 5 is the last day Thai people are allowed to visit their king before his cremation on October 26.

7. Russia launches Kalibr missiles from submarines to attack IS targets in Syria

According to TASS, on October 5, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said that the Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino submarines of the country's Black Sea Fleet carried out attacks with 10 Kalibr cruise missiles on the facilities of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization near the town of Mayadin to support the Syrian army's offensive in Deir ez-Zor province.

"The Black Sea Fleet's submarines Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino carried out two strikes with Kalibr cruise missiles against designated targets from the Mediterranean Sea today," General Konashenkov said.

"The data recorders confirmed the destruction of all the intended targets," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said. According to General Konashenkov, 10 Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from underwater positions.
