The tallest contestant of Miss Vietnam 2018: “Being 1.78m tall is my disadvantage”
Ngoc Bich was also the girl who attracted attention at the preliminary round of Miss Ocean 2017 when she confidently went barefaced and walked the catwalk barefoot.
The beauty was born in 1999 in Cua Nuong village, Son Phu commune, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province. She is studying Tourism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).
Ngoc Bich has an impressive height of 1.78m, with measurements of 84-64-94cm. This 19-year-old beauty participated in Miss Ocean Vietnam 2017 and entered the top 15 most beautiful people. Before participating in beauty contests, Ngoc Bich was born into a farming family in the poor countryside of Ha Tinh.

- As one of the three contestants from Ha Tinh to make it into the top 25 contestants from the North, how do you feel?
I am very happy and proud of that, especially since the previous contest was held in my hometown Ha Tinh. Through the contest, we can introduce many beautiful cultural and traditional features to friends everywhere.
For example, our accent is also a very unique feature that makes many people curious. I hope everyone will understand a part of the beautiful soul of our country people.
During the competition, I also felt much more confident and determined when I was cheered by many people in my hometown.
- Before Miss Vietnam 2018, you were in the top 15 of Miss Ocean 2017. What lessons did you learn for this contest?
I participated in the Miss Ocean contest in 2017. That contest helped me gain experience, get used to the spotlight, and catwalk skills. That was also an advantage for me to not be as bewildered as those who participated in the beauty contest for the first time.
However, I think each contest has different criteria and standards, so I will probably have to relearn a lot of things when I come to Miss Vietnam.
- Being the tallest contestant this year, is that an advantage or a disadvantage for you?
I used to be quite self-conscious about my height. From a young age, I rarely wore high heels because I was already much taller than my friends. Whether height is an advantage or a disadvantage depends on each person’s thinking. As for me, I still see it as a disadvantage.
But I will still be confident because people want to find a beauty queen who is complete both inside and out. Therefore, appearance is not everything to judge. I will also show everything I have to convince the judges and the audience.
- Ngoc Bich once shared that the day she went to Hanoi to study at university was also the day her father left his hometown to follow his daughter to the city to apply for a job as a construction worker. Is it possible that her family's conditions were not as good as many other candidates?
I was born and raised in a poor countryside, without much opportunity to develop, but I am always satisfied with what I have. For many people, it may be a disadvantage, but for me, it is a motivation for me to explore new things and learn more when I go to the city to study at university.
I am very happy to tell people that I used to plant rice and do farming, I have never been shy. I am also always proud to be my parents' child.
Since I came to Hanoi to study, I have worked quite a lot because I wanted to cover my living expenses, gain life experience, and develop my communication skills. When participating in the contest, the organizers always took care of the contestants in the most complete way, so I didn't have to worry too much.

- Are you afraid that others will think you join the contest for money and to change your life?
It depends on each person's perspective. For normal people, suddenly becoming a beauty queen can change their life, but for me, the title of beauty queen is a title that represents the country. It is a huge burden on my shoulders, with many responsibilities, so I can't think like that.
Everyone has a different way of thinking, but I hope they should not impose their thinking on me and those who have the same conditions and circumstances as me. I also hope that such people can follow my path so that they can have a different view and have a correct assessment of me.
- Many people think that beauty contests are just to find people with "long legs but short brains". Are you sad about that?
I hear many people associate long-legged beauties with the two words “short-brained”. But as you can see, many beauties today have proven that this concept and thinking is not correct.
I am also sure that Miss Vietnam will not have such people because the contestants all have their own abilities. I think each person has a different color, if you are not good at this field, you will be good at another field.
So we can not equate long legs with short brains. I hope beauty contests like Miss Vietnam will give people a different perspective.
- Being crowned Miss means your life will follow the direction of showbiz - an environment considered to have many pitfalls, what do you think?
I haven’t thought about this yet, but I will think about it from now on. If I am lucky enough to win the title, I think there will be temptations, but I always believe in myself. Because I am someone who has experienced many difficulties and trained myself to be independent since I was young.
I think I am a person with a lot of life experience, so I will stand firm against temptations and keep myself pure.
- What advantages do you think you have to show in this year's competition?
I am most confident in my smile. I feel that when I smile naturally, I will have more motivation and confidence in myself. Even in the most difficult times, I always try to smile to be optimistic and have more strength to fight. I always believe that a smile can change many things.
So no matter what happens in the future, I will always keep my smile. Many of my friends also commented about me that Bich has nothing but confidence.
After listening, I just smiled because I felt that confidence can help me a lot, make everything smoother and easier, so I always want to maintain this nature.

- Many people say Ngoc Bich transformed from Cinderella to a swan after beauty contests. Do you see your life change like that?
My life has not changed much since participating in beauty pageants. If anything, it has only changed for the better. I have met many people, traveled to many places, and experienced many things. The pageant has helped me develop soft skills that will be beneficial for my future career.
Whether I am Cinderella or a swan, perhaps that is the favor people give me. Currently I have no direction about my image but I think I will not be attached to a certain image.
But the thing I still want to strive for the most is to be a person who is honest with everyone, always lives truthfully and is not ashamed of himself. That is an extremely necessary thing.
