Hung Dong farmers apply lime to off-season vegetables |
As a traditional profession for over 40 years, farmers have gained a lot of experience in producing and cultivating vegetables, especially off-season vegetables.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (My Long hamlet) has 2 sao of garden land. She invested nearly 20 million VND to build a net house with a meter bamboo frame and installed a pump for irrigation to grow vegetables. Building a net house for 1 sao costs over 10 million VND but has limited the impact of weather, heat, and pests. Currently, her entire land area is covered with green vegetables and coriander.
Ms. Xuan said: Before planting, I loosen the soil, leave it in the sun for a few days, add lime powder to disinfect, kill fungi and insect eggs, and then sow the seeds. Just add compost, water enough, and have a roof to protect against the heat, and the vegetables will grow quickly. In winter, it takes 45-60 days to harvest, but this season, it only takes 30 days to harvest. Off-season vegetables have a good price and are easy to sell.

Many farmers invest in greenhouses to protect vegetables from the heat. |
Thanks to the experience of growing off-season vegetables, each crop, farmers earn 5 million VND/sao. On average, 1 hectare of vegetables earns 2 billion VND/year. From 40 hectares of specialized vegetable cultivation, each year Hung Dong farmers earn more than 80 billion VND; more than 10 times higher than growing rice.
However, the biggest difficulty of Dong Vinh vegetable growing area is that there is no clean water source for irrigation. Every day, people are still using rainwater and water in available canals to water vegetables, while this water source is not proactive, when it rains, there is water and when it is dry and hot, the vegetable growing area lacks water. Moreover, the water source to the canals is not guaranteed.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quang - Vice Chairman of Hung Dong Commune People's Committee, Vinh City said: Currently, Hung Dong Commune has proposed Vinh City People's Committee to support the installation of 1.6 km of water pipes from the canal of pumping station 16A to the vegetable field area. At the same time, build 4 tanks with a width of 3 meters running along the middle of the vegetable field; the total estimated investment cost for installing pipes and tanks is about 3 billion VND. That is a sustainable solution to support Hung Dong to become a clean and safe vegetable production area.
Currently, the area of safe vegetables planned in Vinh city is 370 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Nghi Kim, Nghi An, Hung Dong and Nghi Lien.
