Earlier, the Turkish military said its F16 fighter jet shot down a fighter jet for violating airspace, after warnings were issued to the plane.

Turkish television captured footage of the plane exploding in the sky, while the two pilots ejected before the plane burst into flames.

Habertürk TV aired a video of the plane bursting into flames and crashing to the ground in a mountainous area where many Syrian Turkmen live, a site of frequent clashes between the Syrian army and rebels.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu later held a meeting with the Foreign Ministry and ordered diplomatic officials to consult NATO and the United Nations about the incident.

Last month, Türkiye accused Russian warplanes of violating its airspace and threatened to shoot them down if it happened again.

Türkiye also summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the violation of its airspace by Russian fighter jets./.
