Recently, a heartbreaking incident occurred that shocked adults when a female student in grade 7A, Tan Lam Secondary School (residing in Thach Tan commune, Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh) committed suicide in the classroom.
The obedient and studious girl decided to leave after leaving two letters written in English and Vietnamese apologizing to her friends because from now on she could no longer study or play with her classmates.
This female student apologized for her recent decline in academic performance, as she did not achieve the good results her parents and teachers expected.
Previously, a female student from Nghe An fell into a state of fatigue, mood swings, and even aversion to life. She was emaciated, had dark circles under her eyes, and often locked herself in her room. Those unusual symptoms worried her family, who rushed her to the doctor.
The results showed that she suffered from depression and had to be hospitalized at the Psychiatry Department, Hospital 103. In fact, she was not the only case of mental disorder due to the pressure of studying and taking exams.
The story of female student Thuy Trang (Dong Xoai High School, Binh Phuoc Province) who committed suicide and left behind 5 suicide notes also made many people feel heartbroken and tormented after reading them. Among them, 2 letters were sent to her parents, the remaining 3 letters were sent to her sister and friends. All expressed her sadness because her academic results did not meet the expectations of her parents and sister.
In the letter, Trang wrote: “My future is gone, I apologize to my parents. No, no, I can't take it anymore... My future is bleak, my thoughts are bleak, my path is bleak, everything around me is bleak... It's over, it's all over.”
Where does depression come from?

Signs of depression in children
Modern life creates more and more pressure on people, pressure at work, in study, in family life... making us tired, stressed and even leading to depression. Depression is not only a disease of adults, even children can suffer from this disease.
According to the school health results for the period 2011-2015 announced by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training, the number of students with suicidal thoughts is increasing, with one in five students having suicidal thoughts.
Every year, Children's Hospital 1 receives 20 cases of children committing suicide by taking poison. In Vietnam, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people, after traffic accidents.
According to Master of Psychology Nguyen Lan Anh, severe depression almost always begins with moderate crises in adolescence. At that time, the crises are still simple and controllable. As we grow older, our social relationships become more complicated, and the “crisis” can swell into depression. If not intervened and treated early, the “consequences are unpredictable”.
Psychologist Nguyen Ngoc Phuong (Mai Huong Psychiatric Hospital, Hanoi) said that pressure from studying, failing exams, broken hearts, gender complexes, not finding meaning in life, even "competing" and wanting to prove that they are "cool" cause many young people to fall into a state of self-abuse ranging from mild to severe, especially in teenagers (13-19 years old).
"This is the transitional period between "adolescence" and "adulthood", in psychological terms it is called the "stormy and stressful" period - Dr. Phuong emphasized.
Dr. Le Cong Thien (Mental Health Institute - Bach Mai Hospital) said: "Many patients have very unexpected causes of illness, for example: arguing on Facebook, being blackmailed by a lover with nude photos, failing an exam, falling out with an idol, etc. If it is normal and you know how to handle it, it is just a small mental trauma.
But if family members do not detect and intervene in time, the patient may have to take medication for life or commit suicide. For all symptoms of depression, the earlier the detection, the better the chance of recovery.

Dr. Duong Minh Tam, Head of the Stress Treatment Department (Institute of Mental Health), said that one thing in common is that people who like to torture themselves often start the trend with burns and small cuts with a razor blade. They perform this behavior and often do not let people around them know, by doing it in a dark room, bedroom or bathroom.
Doctor Tam said that according to some studies, the habit of self-torture will cause the body to produce natural anesthetics, helping patients to soothe their own mental pain.
Dr. Nguyen Doan Phuong, Director of the Institute of Mental Health, said that self-harm syndrome occurs silently and gradually destroys the patient's body. Unfortunately, this syndrome often occurs in young people. Unrequited love, being scolded by parents, getting bad grades in exams, these are seemingly simple reasons but lead to foolish reactions of many young people.
“Mild cases include fasting and not communicating with the outside world. More serious cases include self-harm by cutting your hands and feet. Even though it only causes immediate pain and does not cause immediate death, self-harm is still classified as suicidal behavior,” Dr. Phuong emphasized.
