The top student in 10th grade doesn't know about... extra tutoring.
(Baonghean.vn) - Coming from a "village school," Nguyen Thi Van Nhi (Dien Hanh Secondary School, Dien Chau) excelled, surpassing nearly 29,000 candidates to win the top spot in the 2017-2018 10th grade entrance exam with very high scores: Math 10, Literature 9.5, and English 9.25.
"The top scorer in the 10th grade entrance exam in Nghe An is a student from a 'village school'."
This result came as a surprise to many. However, for Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Van Nhi's father, it was a well-deserved outcome reflecting Van Nhi's hard work.
He said: "Van Nhi is the eldest daughter in the family. However, due to her weak health, she has mainly attended school near home since she started school. Even in the 6th grade, Nhi passed the entrance exam to Cao Xuan Huy School – the top school in Dien Chau district – but because the school was too far away, transportation was inconvenient, and Nhi's health was unstable, she only studied there for one year before the family transferred her back to Dien Hanh School near home."
Although she only attended a regular school in the village, her parents were very reassured because every year she was selected for the school's gifted student team in both Math and English. In 9th grade, Nhi won an Encouragement Award at the Provincial Gifted Student Competition in Math.

With her above-average academic performance, Nhi's teachers repeatedly advised her to confidently apply to the provincial specialized high school, but her parents didn't put any pressure on her. On the contrary, they encouraged her to develop her abilities. Nhi was fortunate to have a mother who was a math teacher, so she understood her daughter's capabilities and allowed her to develop freely.
Remarkably, despite achieving high scores in all three subjects, Van Nhi did not attend any extra tutoring sessions before the exam. Besides her regular classes, Nhi primarily studied at home and supplemented her knowledge through advanced classes for gifted students at her school.
Sharing her secret, Van Nhi said: For the 10th grade high school entrance exam, if you're not applying to specialized schools, you don't need to attend extra classes; just focus on listening to lectures in class. Knowledge should be accumulated throughout the entire process, not just right before the exam to concentrate on studying.
In addition, you should practice different types of questions to become familiar with them, and during the exam, you need to apply your knowledge flexibly, avoiding rigid and formulaic approaches.

Regarding her perfect score in Math, Van added: "Although many people said the exam was difficult, I actually found it to be entirely within the review curriculum, and our teachers had practiced this type of problem during the exam preparation. However, during the exam, candidates need to pay attention to flexibly applying the knowledge they have learned in order to do well."
Following this result, on June 19th, the Dien Hanh commune authorities and Dien Hanh Secondary School also came to present gifts to Van Nhi. The top student in 10th grade also shared: "This is just the initial result, and I still have a long way to go..."
This success is not just mine, but also belongs to my family and teachers, and I will always strive to live up to everyone's expectations.
My Ha
