In 2015, realizing that raising foreign sows was economically efficient, Ms. Ho Thi Hong boldly took on a contract for 1.5 hectares of land in Trinh Mon Farm, Quynh Bang Commune to renovate and build a farm raising foreign sows. The family built 3 barns, each with an area of 400m2; then bought 200 foreign sows from the US and Taiwan to raise. Initially, to understand the techniques of raising foreign sows, Ms. Hong and her husband, Mr. Vu Van Nang, went to provinces such as Yen Bai, Dong Nai... to learn and learn how to take care of foreign sows.
“I know that raising livestock requires investment and perseverance, so during the raising process, I went to learn from large farms and mainly learned and researched on my own. The most important thing when raising livestock is to prevent diseases, vaccinate periodically, and ensure a scientific raising process so that the livestock can develop healthily and grow quickly,” Ms. Hong shared.

Each sow has a number attached to its ear for easy tracking and care. |
Ms. Hong's family's model of raising foreign sows is large-scale and modern. Currently, all 3 barns are completely separate, including the pregnant sow barn, the piglet barn and the farrowing sow barn. In each barn, the cells are made of iron frames with a complete exhaust fan system and cooling system with a total cost of 3 billion VND. From the stage of building the barn, building the biogas tank, the automatic drinking water system for the pigs, the cooling system, and the electric heating for the piglets, Ms. Hong's family follows the scientific process guided by the center.
After more than a year of getting used to raising foreign sows, Ms. Hong realized many outstanding advantages of the breed, each sow gave birth to 2.5 litters/year, each litter from 10 to 11 piglets. In the first year, there were 50 sows giving birth to over 1,000 piglets. All the piglets ready for sale were purchased by farms and households inside and outside the district.
In addition to raising foreign sows, she also raises about 200 chickens and geese and digs a fish pond with an area of 6,000 m2. The farm has created stable jobs for 5 workers with salaries ranging from 4 to 8 million VND/person/month. Total annual income reaches nearly 1 billion VND/year.

Piglets are well cared for |
Ms. Hong said that in order for livestock farming to develop sustainably, epidemic prevention must be done from a distance. People entering the farm must spray disinfectant; vehicles transporting pigs to market must be disinfected and go on separate roads; the barn and surrounding environment must always be kept clean, and pigs must be vaccinated properly and with the right dose... The special thing about foreign pigs is that the barn must always be clean, dry and airy, so she has to assign workers to take turns on duty 24/7.
Ms. Ho Thi Hong's wish is to lease land long-term to invest in upgrading barns and increasing the herd. Because the supply of piglets is not enough for farmers, in the near future she is planning to expand another 3 hectares of land to develop raising foreign sows, creating jobs for many workers.
