Since taking over as CDU leader in December, Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer's popularity has fallen, she is angry at the failure of her efforts to hasten Ms Merkel's departure, and the Christian Democratic Union had its worst result in national elections, according to the agency.
This led Merkel to believe that Kramp-Karrenbauer would not be able to do the job of chancellor well in the future, the news agency wrote.
According to the source, in the context of a series of failures of her successor, Ms. Merkel is more inclined than ever to stay on as chancellor until the end of her term in 2021.
Kramp-Karrenbauer’s approval rating has dropped to 36%, according to an ARD poll released on May 2. It is the lowest since she became party leader. Merkel leads Kramp-Karrenbauer by nearly 20% in the poll.
Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected chairwoman of the CDU in place of Ms Merkel at a party congress in Hamburg last December.
