Prime Minister Fico warns Maidan is about to erupt in Slovakia
Prime Minister Fico said the Slovak opposition is preparing for the Maidan process.

According to RIA Novosti, at a joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban on January 21, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said the opposition is preparing to organize Maidan in Slovakia.
“I cannot name names, I cannot state the circumstances, but I can say seriously that the opposition in Slovakia is preparing for Maidan. The Slovak opposition is preparing to occupy government buildings, to oppose the work of the government, in cooperation with foreign forces” – said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Earlier the same day, the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) announced that it had received information about an operation aimed at destabilizing the country, with long-term effects. A spokesman for the SIS said that specific data could not be published due to their content and confidentiality.
Additionally, the Slovak Parliament is voting on the issue of introducing a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Fico's government.
The conflict between the opposition and Mr. Fico escalated after the Slovak Prime Minister visited Moscow on December 22, 2024, and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Prime Minister Fico explained that the trip was motivated by the need to resolve the gas supply issue, after the Kiev government terminated the agreement on Russian gas transit through Ukraine. Slovak opposition parties criticized the head of government for this visit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on December 23, 2024 criticized Prime Minister Fico for not wanting to end the dependence of NATO member Slovakia on Russia's natural resources.
Transit flows through Ukraine account for about half of Russia’s total pipeline gas exports to Europe. Slovakia, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic are among the countries most affected by the end of the extended transit agreement.
