On the night of May 5, the police received a report of an accident at the Ha Dong - Phu Dien railway section, on the Bac Hong - Van Dien route, in Bac Tu Liem district. The victim was a 30-year-old woman, who had lost 1/3 of her left hand and 1/3 of her left foot, her hand and foot were severed.
The victim was taken to the 19/8 Hospital for emergency treatment and the doctors reconnected the severed parts. Four days later, the victim requested to be transferred to Viet Duc Hospital and the doctors there were forced to remove the severed body parts due to necrosis of the wound...
Working with the police, the woman said her name was Lan, she was upset about family matters so she wandered around and was sucked in by the train. When the train crushed her arms and legs, a young man passed by, Lan called for help and luckily escaped death.
However, during the investigation, the police determined that Ms. Lan and the young man who reported the news knew each other. After more than 3 months of investigation, the police clarified that the accident did not happen, and that Lan had staged a scene of having her legs and arms crushed by a train.
According to this woman, she had previously purchased three life insurance policies. Due to financial difficulties, Lan thought of a way to harm herself to get insurance payouts.
Lan discussed with the young man she knew and hired him to cut off her arms and legs. Accordingly, if the accident was real, Lan would receive a life insurance payment of about 3.5 billion VND.
According to the investigation agency, Lan has not received the insurance money so is not considered criminally responsible. Authorities believe that this is the first serious insurance fraud case in Vietnam in many years.
