After talks between the two leaders at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on April 7 (local time), senior advisers to Mr. Trump said President Xi agreed to a 100-day plan to step up trade negotiations to increase Chinese exports to the US and cut the US trade deficit with China.
China pledged an investment package that would create more than 700,000 American jobs, similar to the number Japan pledged to Mr. Trump during Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Mar-a-Lago in February, according to advisers.
In return, President Xi expects President Trump to guarantee not to raise tariffs on Chinese imports and delay arms sales to Taiwan until after the Chinese Communist Party congress ends later this year, the source added.
Speaking after the summit, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said: "The two leaders agreed to expand areas of cooperation and resolve disagreements based on the principle of mutual respect."
Mr. Trump also expressed US concerns about China's activities in the East Sea, according to Secretary of State Tillerson.
In addition, Mr. Xi agreed to strengthen cooperation to curb the DPRK's nuclear weapons and missile development program, but Secretary Tillerson did not specify the form of cooperation. Mr. Tillerson said President Xi agreed with President Trump that North Korea's nuclear weapons development program had reached a "very dangerous stage."
In addition, in a phone call on April 8, Mr. Trump informed Acting President of South Korea Hwang Kyo-ahn that he had explained to President Xi about the US's stance on deploying the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. China opposes the US bringing THAAD to South Korea, while Washington and Seoul assert that this system is to deal with the threat from North Korean missiles.
