Indochina banknotes: If not counting the failed banknote of Ho Quy Ly, Indochina banknotes are considered the first banknote of Vietnam. The Indochina banknote with a face value of 100 piastres was issued and circulated by the French from 1885 to 1954. On it were printed pictures of 3 young women in traditional costumes of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. |

After the August Revolution in 1945, copper coins were officially printed and circulated. The front of the coin had the words “Democratic Republic of Vietnam” printed in the national language, Chinese characters and a picture of President Ho Chi Minh. The back had pictures of workers, farmers and soldiers. The numbers showing the denomination were in Arabic numerals or Chinese, Lao, and Cambodian characters. |

Banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam: Banknotes issued by the State Bank of Vietnam were put into use after Decree 15/SL establishing the State Bank of Vietnam signed by President Ho. 1 bank dong can be exchanged for 10 financial dongs (Uncle Ho dong) and include many denominations: 1, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000. The form of banknotes is quite similar to before and only changes are the pictures printed on the back and the color of each denomination. |
