The director of the US Military Intelligence Agency, Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart, said that IS elements have infiltrated the flow of refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq to find their way to other countries, including the US.
Speaking at a congressional hearing, General Stewart said IS “may be planning additional attacks in Europe and seeking to launch attacks in the United States in 2016.”
Meanwhile, speaking before the Senate Armed Services Committee the same day, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper assessed that extremists are currently operating in about 40 countries and that more and more ideal hiding places for terrorist groups are appearing.
In the US intelligence community's annual report on global threats, Mr. Clapper expressed concern about the information that IS is believed to have seized passport issuance facilities in Syria, increasing the risk of extremists using fake passports to infiltrate countries.
The report added that “approximately 60 individuals linked to IS were arrested in the US in 2016”./.
