AP reported that BBC correspondent in Myanmar Nay Myo Lin was sentenced to three months in prison and hard labor by a local court on June 6 after being convicted of assaulting a police officer while covering a student protest.

Lawyer Thein Than said on June 7 that his client, who works for the BBC's Myanmar service, plans to appeal.

Mr. Thein Than called the verdict "unfair" and said that reporter Nay Myo Lin did not intentionally injure the police officer while trying to support a fellow countryman.

The incident occurred in March 2015 when Nay Myo Lin was covering a protest. A police officer pulled a protester off a motorbike and reporter Nay Myo Lin tried to help the protester, leading to a scuffle with the police./.
