Shrimp farming in Dien Chau earns 14 billion VND per year.

This profession is solving the problem of hundreds of idle workers and contributing to improving economic efficiency from shrimp.

Peeled shrimp are produced all year round, but the main season is from April to September because the source of sea shrimp is very abundant. The shrimp selected for peeled shrimp must be fresh and uniform. Thanks to the development of peeled shrimp processing, nearly 25,000 tons of fresh shrimp are consumed by fishermen each year. After bringing the shrimp home, they are washed and then boiled briefly on the stove. This is also a very important step because if the shrimp is boiled too long, it will be crushed and if it is not boiled enough, it will be very difficult to peel.

The shrimp peeling process is employing about 500 workers, mainly women and the elderly, who take advantage of their free time. The shrimp peeling job also brings in an income of about 100,000 VND/person/day.

After peeling, the shrimp are washed, spread evenly on a tray and dried on a charcoal stove for 5 hours. On average, 10kg of fresh shrimp can produce 1kg of dried shrimp. Good quality dried shrimp are bright red, firm and have a sweet, aromatic taste.

Currently in Dien Chau, there are about 150 households working in the shrimp industry, of which 20 establishments specialize in purchasing and producing shrimp concentrated in the two communes of Dien Ngoc and Dien Bich. The output of Dien Chau shrimp reaches 22 tons/year, bringing in a value of about 14 billion VND. After processing, shrimp costs 500-800 kg VND/kg.
