The announcement was made just minutes after the official Facebook page of the Office of the President of Myanmar posted the information: "Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw resigned on March 21, 2018", because he wanted to "rest".
The government confirmed that Mr Htin Kyaw had occasionally sought medical treatment abroad, most recently in January when he visited Singapore.
Rumors circulated last year that President Htin Kyaw had resigned, but the government and officials from Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party denied the reports.
Mr. U Htin Kyaw was elected President of the Republic of Myanmar on March 15, 2016. He is the first civilian President of Myanmar since 1960. Mr. Htin Kyaw is one of the close allies of Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi./.
