Russian President Putin said on September 1 that Russia is seeking to end the conflict in Ukraine, stemming from the consequences of the 2014 coup, as well as prevent the emergence of an “anti-Russian zone” on Ukrainian territory.

In a speech to an open class of Russian schoolchildren, Mr. Putin asserted: “Everyone sees that there have been some aggressive actions against Russia. No one understands or knows that after the coup in Ukraine in 2014, a large number of people in Donetsk, Lugansk, Crimea do not want to recognize the results of this coup.”

“After the coup, Ukraine's leaders started a war with their own citizens and have been waging this war for eight years,” Mr. Putin said.

“Our goal, our mission and that of the Donbass militias, is to end this war, to protect the people and, of course, to protect Russia itself.” “An anti-Russian encirclement is being created on the territory of Ukraine today, which is threatening our country,” President Putin stressed.

Ukraine has not yet responded to President Putin's statement.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, accusing Kiev of failing to implement the Minsk agreements, which were designed to give the Donetsk and Lugansk regions special status. The agreement, brokered by Germany and France, was first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the agreement to buy time and “create a powerful armed force.”
