President Putin proposes new Defense Minister to replace General Shoigu

(Baonghean.vn) - President Vladimir Putin proposed that the Federation Council (Senate) appoint Deputy Prime Minister Belousov as the new Russian Minister of Defense.

According to RIA Novosti, on the Federation Council's Telegram channel, President Vladimir Putin proposed appointing Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov as Minister of Defense for the 2024-2030 term.

"The Federation Council has received a list of candidates proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the positions of heads of a number of ministries and agencies. One of them, Andrei Removich Belousov, has been proposed for consideration for the position of Minister of Defense," the statement said.

Along with that, President Putin appointed Mr. Sergei Shoigu - current Minister of Defense, as Secretary of the Security Council. By another decree, President Putin dismissed Mr. Nikolai Patrushev from this position of Secretary.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Mr. Belousov was proposed for the position of Minister of Defense because the apparatus needed innovation to create conditions for the country's economic competitiveness.

"It is important that the country's economy is in line with the economy of the superpower bloc," Mr. Peskov emphasized.

The Kremlin spokesman further clarified that Sergei Shoigu, as Secretary of the National Security Council, will concurrently serve as Deputy Prime Minister responsible for the military-industrial complex. In addition, Shoigu will oversee the activities of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation. According to Peskov, Shoigu will continue to work in the field in which he has extensive experience.

In addition, according to Kremlin spokesman Peskov, along with the new Minister of Defense, a number of other positions were submitted to the Federation Council as follows: Valery Gerasimov - Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces; Vladimir Kolokoltsev - Minister of Internal Affairs; Alexander Kurenkov - Minister of Emergencies and Disaster Relief; Sergei Lavrov - Minister of Foreign Affairs; Konstantin Chuychenko - Minister of Justice; Sergei Naryshkin - Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service; Alexander Bortnikov - Director of the Federal Security Service; Viktor Zolotov - Director of the National Guard...

According to the regulations, the Federal Council will hold consultations on this nomination list at committee meetings on May 13 and at the Senate meeting on May 14.

Mr. Andrei Belousov has served in the Government since 2006.

In 2006-2008, he was Deputy Minister of Economic Development.

From 2008-2012, Belousov served as Director of the Russian Government's economic and financial department.

From 2012-2013, he served as Minister of Economic Development.

On June 24, 2013, he was appointed as assistant to the President of Russia; and on June 13, 2018, he continued to be appointed to this position.

On January 21, 2020, Andrei Belousov became Permanent Deputy Prime Minister.
