Writing on Twitter, Mr. Trump commented: “Kim Jong-un of North Korea made a very wise and reasoned decision. Any other would have been tragic and unacceptable!”
The relationship between the US and North Korea has become very tense in recent times. Since Mr. Trump declared that he would show North Korea “fire and fury”, the head of the White House and the North Korean side have continuously responded with a “war of words”.
Concerns about the risk of nuclear conflict reached a fever pitch as North Korea announced plans to launch medium-range missiles toward the island of Guam.
However, things have calmed down in recent days. On August 15, North Korean state media reported that leader Kim Jong-un had reviewed the above missile launch plan, but decided to postpone it.
The news came after US Defense Secretary James Mattis warned that if North Korea launched a missile towards US territory, it would be considered a “game-changer”.
Currently, the conflict between the US and North Korea regarding Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program remains unresolved.
For years, this story has been a vicious cycle: the US accuses North Korea of threatening regional security with nuclear weapons, then conducts military exercises with South Korea; North Korea sees those exercises as a threat to Pyongyang, and continues its nuclear weapons program.
It is not known whether Mr. Trump's recent "praise" will satisfy North Korea or not, but we know that in less than a week, the US and South Korea will conduct the annual exercise called Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, starting on August 21 and ending 10 days later.
