Gangster used AK gun to fire 23 bullets at police

A year after shooting back at police during an arrest, injuring a soldier, a gang leader in Kon Tum and his followers were sentenced.

On December 21, the People's Court of Kon Tum province held a first-instance trial and sentenced Tran Trung Hung (30 years old) to 30 years in prison for the crimes of Murder, Possession of military weapons, Intentional infliction of injury, Illegal drug trafficking, Extortion, and Kidnapping for the purpose of appropriating property.

18 people involved in the case were sentenced to the highest sentence of 6 years and 3 months in prison, the lowest of 9 months suspended.

According to the indictment, Hung is an especially dangerous criminal with 5 previous convictions in Kon Tum. In 2012, he and his accomplices used weapons to beat someone, injuring 51% of them, and quickly escaped.

In 2013, Hung masterminded the purchase of drugs and persuaded his accomplices to sell them to other addicts for money. He fled after committing the crime and is wanted by the police.

A year later, this man went to Laos to buy two AK47 and K59 guns along with more than 100 bullets, always carrying them with him for self-defense.

In 2016, Hung and his followers repeatedly used force to threaten and extort more than 250 million VND from people. In particular, they kidnapped the couple's son and demanded 100 million VND. During the detention, Hung put a gun to his head, forced him to cut off two joints of his little finger and then let him go home.

On November 30, 2016, while hiding in a sandbank in Dak Bla commune, Kon Tum city, Hung was surrounded by police. He used an AK47 to fire 23 bullets at the police, injuring a lieutenant by 63%, then escaped.

Due to the dangerous nature of the crime, Major General Ho Sy Tien - Director of the Criminal Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) went to Kon Tum to direct the task force to arrest Hung.

Half a month later, the police determined that the gangster was hiding in a house in Chu Pah district, Gia Lai. They surrounded him and called on him to surrender. Hung took out two guns, loaded them and held out. The pursuing force was forced to use smoke and tear gas to suppress him. With no way out, the gangster laid down his weapon, and at the same time, the detectives rushed in to control him.
