Trump appoints new national security adviser
US President Donald Trump has just announced the selection of Lieutenant General HR McMaster as national security adviser, filling the void left a week after the surprise firing of Michael Flynn.
CNN reported that McMaster - Director of the US Army Capabilities Integration Center - will become one of Mr. Trump's top advisers on foreign policy and national security, directing the White House National Security Council. This position was left vacant after Mr. Flynn was forced to resign after only 24 days in office.

Retired General Keith Kellogg - who temporarily replaced Flynn as national security adviser - will return to his role as chief of staff to the National Security Council.
President Trump announced the new decision while sitting next to McMaster and Kellogg at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he had spoken a day earlier with McMaster and several other candidates for the vacant position.
"He's an incredibly talented and incredibly experienced man," the new US president said of McMaster. "I've been watching and reading a lot over the last two days. He's highly respected in the military, and we're very honored to have him."
McMaster described his appointment as a privilege, and pledged to do "everything possible to promote and protect the interests of the American people".
McMaster was not Donald Trump's first choice to fill Flynn's position. He initially chose retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward, but Harward turned him down amid concerns about how the White House was being run.
Trump fired Flynn after it emerged that he had discussed US sanctions against Moscow with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergei Kislyak, before the Trump administration took office. He later lied to Vice President Mike Pence about it.
