US President Donald Trump wants to impose a 20% tax on imports from Mexico, forcing the country to pay for the construction of a wall between the two countries. |
This is an action to force Mexico to pay for the wall that Mr. Trump wants to build.
Press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters aboard Air Force One on January 26 (US time) that Mr. Trump supported the proposal, and had just discussed it with Republican lawmakers in a private meeting.
“That way we could have $10 billion a year, and easily pay for the wall through that mechanism alone,” Spicer added.
In response to Mr. Trump's order to build the wall, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto canceled his visit to Washington. Mr. Pena Nieto declared to the Mexican people that the country would not pay for the wall.
“I regret and condemn the decision of the United States to continue building the border wall that for years has divided us, instead of uniting us,” Enrique Pena Nieto declared.
It is estimated that the cost of building a wall between the US and Mexico is around 10 billion USD.
